Chapter Two

The limousine pulls up just as we enter the forecourt. The servants are out in a long, neat row, ready to greet Mother. I do not see Lady Oonagh, but I haven’t seen her since I did the Bloedhart and became a fully-fledged shifter. She got sick shortly after that and didn’t come out again that summer. I haven’t been back since. Murtagh is there, though, standing at the front, ready to greet us. He looks bleak and pointed as always, his preachers collar stark white. His black hair is perfectly slicked back and clothes pressed within an inch of their lives. His hands are behind him and his nose slightly in the air.

I approach hard and fast, flying low over the servants and straight up Murtagh’s face. He doesn’t flinch. But I pull up circle around and glide down as I shift back into human form.

Murtagh, the old bird, doesn’t even look at me. The ravens all shift and land until there are fifty or more standing behind me, all tightly-clad in their Ravensgaard seal skin leather; with plenty of straps to hold their weapons. They all look refreshed and happy after the jaunt through the fresh afternoon air.

Mother ignores Murtagh and looks only at me as she steps from the limo. She’s shaking her head at my display, but I can see a slight twinkle in her eye. Despite her preference for law and order, she doesn’t mind one bit that I’m strong-willed and a bit wild. To fulfill her ambitions, that’s what she needs me to be. I don’t know if I have all that in me, but I do know I love to fly.

“Welcome to Castle Brannach.” Murtagh addresses my mother with a formal bow. All the servants follow suit. Glancing down the line, I can tell they’re not raven shifters, but they’re all shape shifters there’s a brightness in their eyes that gives it away. An inner glow that comes after the Bloedhart, which I presume only shifters can see. I’ve never asked any humans. I smile at the thought. Talking to a human about the shifter world, well the Order would kill you for that. Mother and Murtagh move up the stone stairs and into the shadowy interiors of the castle.

I spin and raise my hands in greeting to the Ravensgaard clustered behind me. Most of them cheer or give a whooping hello. The guy standing next to Iona doesn’t, he just stares at me, curious. I ignore him.

“Iona!” I squeal, pulling her into a tight hug. Ravensgaard surround us, patting me on the back with warm wishes.

“I thought you were never coming back.” Iona laughs, gripping my shoulders. “Figured I’d given you too much of a thrashing last time you were here.”

“As if!” I mockingly karate chop her shoulder. She grabs my wrist and twists it around.

A gentle cough interrupts our controtions. Iona giggles. Jon stands there, eyebrow raised, clearly expecting a little more attention. “Let me introduce you to, Jon, my fiancé,” Iona says with a broad, flourishing stroke of her arm.
